Soil Health Cards

A microscope assessment of your soil biology is essential because the amounts and composition of those microorganisms in your soil determine soil health. But other indicators of soil health can also be helpful to evaluate.
A quick and easy way to score these other indicators is by using a soil health card, like the one below, released by the USDA's Natural Resource Conservation Service. Of the 7 indicators on this scorecard, only plants ("surface cover") and macroinvertebrates ("earthworms") create soil health, but all the indicators are still useful - especially to illustrate positive or negative impacts of your management.
